Is that the ghost of bloggers past?

I haven’t been posting. I know, big shock to my formerly regular readers. What can I say? I’ve been dancing, teaching, rehearsing, working… I just couldn’t bring myself to talk about dance. I feel like I’ve been going around in circles (which, for a dancer, isn’t necessarily bad.) I was looking to replace my old part-time job and that took up a lot of time. But really I think it has been a serious bout of dance malaise. Maybe getting married made me feel like a grownup and the dancer’s life feels so removed from that. How many more years can an intelligent person with a solid education struggle with money, health insurance, and the vagaries of a dance career? Let alone my own personal religious issues that further obstruct my dance career (yes, I lost three more opportunities in the last 6 months–1 TV show, 1 music video, and 1 film.) I always said that if I had to give up dancing, I would give it up altogether. No jobs related to dance… I think I’ve stopped blogging because I just did not want to think about it. So why post now? I don’t really know. I had started teaching a new class two months ago and today I found out that it’s being cancelled because I haven’t been able to build it up. And this new disappointment has somehow brought me back to writing. Not the new NY Times dance critic, not the wondrous football season, not my many and varied thoughts on how dance relates to obscure ESPN contests, not the past performances nor the upcoming ones (more on that another time.) All I know is that here I am talking about dance again and its the same conversation as before. How do I feel fulfilled outside of the moments of dancing because life is always good when I’m dancing. Its when I stop and think about dance that dance isn’t so good. Married life is great. Wonderful. Incredible. Its this damn dance career. So there you are. And here I am. Maybe I’ll stay a little while longer.

Periods of metamorphose are always unsettling. It seems in life that by the time we are comfortable in a particular role, we are already gazing back and on our way somewhere else. Sounds a bit like dancing doesn’t it?
