The Dance Wire

Interesting to see the music world seeking out “>modern dance.

Ever on the hunt for innovation, Warp Records steps into yet another creative dimension with a stab at the interpretive world of dance. Weaving electronic music, contemporary dance, and multimedia together, the label gives new meaning to the word dance music by incorporating the music of artists Plaid and Jamie Lidell into the choreography of a few modern dance companies, Random Dance, led by Wayne McGregor, and Darren Johnston’s group, Array. Joining this crew will also be Brighton-based video artist Bob Jaroc.

And here is info on a ballet that will be performed to sounds produced by live seismic movements.

On stage, Maffre will improvise to sounds measured by a UC Berkeley Streckeisen STS-1 seismometer and transformed in real time by a system that Goldberg developed with Vijay Vasudevan, a UC Berkeley senior majoring in computer science. The signals will trigger natural sounds such as thunder claps, crashing waves and waterfalls.

“The Earth will control these sounds just as a conductor controls an orchestra by moving a baton,” Goldberg said.
